In December 2020, we announced our intentions to build the Exeedme gaming platform on the interoperating blockchain network Polkadot. Polkadot is the key to unlocking the actual creation of the digital metaverse through its groundbreaking network protocol. Currently, the model for the ownership of in-game assets is restricting, while action verification is weak and highly asynchronous. Polkadot addresses this issue by allowing tokens to flow freely between games and across blockchains. Putting the entire state of a game on-chain and having the player’s time and skills to be universally rewarded is the ultimate goal. As of now, Exeedme is developing on Ethereum as it is a general purpose blockchain but soon, Polkadot will be able to expand on our capabilities.
Polkadot is a network protocol that allows arbitrary data, not only tokens, to be transferred across blockchains. This is critical to expanding games and functionality across blockchain without reducing quality.
The core of Polkadot is built on the relay chain, which is responsible for the network’s shared security, consensus, and cross-chain interoperability. Then it uses parachains, which are sovereign blockchains that can have their own tokens and optimize their functionality for particular uses. The parathreads are similar to parachains and utilize a pay-as-you-go model for a more cost-efficient operation. Lastly, the bridges allow parachains and parathreads to connect with outside networks like Ethereum and Bitcoin.
Polkadot has positioned itself as the top player for multi chain infrastructure, cross-chain finance, and blockchain interoperability. Another reason the platform’s adoption is accelerating is the inherent security it offers the community via the consensus and governance roles that fortify the reliability and trust within each project. The consensus roles include:
- nominators, who secure the relay chain through selection of trustworthy validators and staking dots;
- validators, who secure the relay chain by validating proofs from collators;
- collators, who maintain shards by collecting shard transactions from users and producing proofs for the validator; and
- fishermen, who are constantly monitoring the network looking for bad behaviour to report to the validators.
These roles combined with the governance roles of council members and the technical committee ensure that Polkadot is able to live up to high performance and transparency standards.
A great share of projects currently exploring Polkadot are infrastructure or DeFi related. There are already a growing number of notable ones being built on Polkadot, such as the popular Ocean Protocol, a tokenized data service that allows the user to share data, storage, algorithms, etc. in a secure manner. Likewise, projects like Dock provide verifiable credentials’ management, and Chainlink is building smart contracts in the Web 3.0 ecosystem using decentralized oracles for reliable external data.
The project most closely related to our goals with NFTs is Darwinia Network, which is a heterogeneous cross-chain bridge protocol with main applications including DeFi but also NFTs trade markets and games. They offer a virtual simulation blockchain game called “Evolution Land” that already supports cross-chain interactions. Projects that are exploring this vertical are still scarce and we remain among the pioneers to push for exploration of gaming competition development through DeFi and NFTs on Polkadot.
